Saint Catherine Monastery
The monastery of Saint Catherine is the oldest in Egypt and it is the most ancient Christian monastery which is still operating until today. Situated 60 kilometers to the North of Sharm El Sheikh and about 430 kilometers to the South East of Cairo, the Egyptian capital, the monastery of Saint Catherine is one of the most impressive Christian monuments in Egypt.
Constructed by the Roman Emperor; Justinian, at the bottom of the holy mountains of Sinai Mount where Moses received the commands of God, the monastery which was built in the middle of the 5th century.
The monastery was actually constructed over the ruins of a much older chapel erected by Empress Helena in 337 AD in the location where it is believed that Moses saw the famous Burning Bush. The impressive fortified walls of the monastery of Saint Catherine dates back to the 6th century.
It was only during the 11th century when the monastery was dedicated to the soul of Saint Catharine; a Christian martyr who was tortured and killed in Alexandria by the Romans in the 4th century. The legends say that her body was found on top of a high mountain in Sinai and this was why it was called the Catherine Mountain; around 2500 meters above sea level which makes it the highest mountain in Egypt.
The monastery of Saint Catherine is featured with its ancient churches, Christian icons, gardens, Well of Moses, the Bell Tower, the Burning Bush, and one of the most important Christian libraries in the world.
