What to Enjoy When in Aswan

Aswan, formerly known as ‘Assuan’ is an ancient city in Egypt. Despite being an ancient city, it is not at all “backwards.” Small enough to walk around and be graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing.

One of the best things to do is stroll up and down the broad corniche, watching the sailboats etch the sky with their tall masts, or even just sit in the floating restaurants listening to Nubian music.

Watching the Nubian dancers perform to the music in the cultural center is a leisure in a league all its own, and eating freshly caught fish from the Nile could be an experience of a lifetime.

Rich in History!

This city not only houses the garrison of the Egyptian army now but has also had the privilege of housing many garrisons of the Egyptian army over the years. It has also played host to that of the Turkish troops, General Kitchener, and the Romans. With so many things to do and see in Aswan, you will never be bored.

Enjoy the Beauty of the Nile

In Aswan, the Nile is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, islands covered in palm trees and tropical plants. Explore the souk, full of the scents and color of spices, perfumes, scarves, and baskets.

Revel in the amazing sunsets while having tea on the terrace of the Legend Old Cataract Hotel (Named for the location of the Nile’s first cataract located here).

Aswan has been a favorite winter resort since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and it’s still a perfect place to get away from it all and leave behind your hectic schedules.

Shopping

The city proper lies on the east bank of the Nile. Relax here, visit a few temples, but then prepare for an adventure. The bazaar runs along the corniche, which continues beyond the Ferial Gardens and the Nubian Museum, with its forest of cupolas, surmounted tombs from the Fatimid period.

Islands

Towards the south, there are two Greco-Roman sarcophagi, and an unfinished colossus remains half-buried in the sand. The most famous is Elephantine Island, which is eternal with artifacts dating from Pre-Dynastic times onward. It is the largest island in the area. Visiting the island is some of the most fun you can have here.

Winters

November to April are the best months to be in Aswan. Summers are scorching, and winter temperatures have been known to reach 27°C during the day, with cold nights. For those who do not mind the heat, you can visit during the summers and experience all the fun while avoiding the crowds.

Since this is Egypt’s sunniest southern city, it is the perfect destination to stroll and relax in a magical cultural setting: wandering down the broad walkways is just one of the many fun things to do when in Aswan.

Health

Since ancient times, Aswan has been popular for environmental therapy. In the past, people would bury aching parts of your body in Aswan’s sand, producing valuable results and helping to relieve them from stubborn ailments such as rheumatism, arthritis, joint swelling, and skin inflammation. This might be true or just a myth, but it seems like a fun thing to try.
