The Oasis City of Aswan
Aswan, or formerly known as ‘Assuan’ is an ancient city of Egypt. Despite being an ancient city it is not backward in any way. Small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing.
One of the best things to do is strolling up and down the broad Corniche watching the sailboats etch the sky with their tall masts or even sitting in the floating restaurants listening to Nubian music and watch the Nubian dancers perform on the music in the cultural centre is a leisure of its own sort and eating freshly caught fish from the Nile could be an experience of a lifetime.
Rich in history, this city not only houses the garrison of the Egyptian army now but has had the privilege of housing many garrisons of the Egyptian army over the years. Not only that but also that of the Turkish troops, General Kitchener, and Romans. You will not be bored and find many things to do in Aswan.
Enjoy the Beauty of Nile
In Aswan, the Nile is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, islands covered in palm trees and tropical plants. Explore the souk, full of the scent and colour of spices, perfumes, scarves, and baskets.
Enjoy the amazing sunsets while having tea on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel (Named due to the location of the Nile's first cataract located here).
Aswan has been a favourite winter resort since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and it's still a perfect place to get away from it all and something to do with a hectic schedule.
The city proper lies on the east bank of the Nile. Relax here, visit a few mosques, but then prepare for an adventure. The bazaar runs along the Corniche, which continues beyond the Ferial Gardens and the Nubian Museum, with its forest of cupolas, surmounted tombs from the Fatimid period.
Towards the south, there are two Graeco-Roman sarcophagi and an unfinished colossus remains half buried in the sand. The most famous are the Elephantine Island, which is eternal with artefacts dating from pre-Dynastic times onward. It is the largest island in the area. To visit this island would be the most fun thing to do.
Since Ancient times, Aswan has been popular for environmental therapy, the people in the past used to bury the aching parts of your body in Aswan’s sand which gave them valuable results and helped to relieve them from stubborn ailments such as rheumatism, arthritis, joint edema and skin inflammation. This might be true or just a myth but seems like a fun thing to try.
May and September are the hottest months to be in Aswan. Summer is scorching and winter temperatures have been known to reach 27 during the day, with cold nights. For those who do not mind the heat can visit during the summers and experience all the fun while avoiding a crowd.
Since this is Egypt's sunniest southern city it is the perfect destination to stroll and relax in a magical cultural setting: wander down the broad walkway are a few of the many fun things to do when in Aswan.
